RUBBER TYRED TRANSTAINER® CRANE
The Transtainer® Crane, and especially the Rubber Tyred Transtainer® Crane, is the key element invented by PACECO® for handling containers in a terminal. The Rubber Tyred Transtainer® Crane or RTT is a rigid gantry crane mounted on large rubber tyres which travels in a straight line on a horizontal path, just the same as if it were running on rails.
The RTT® Crane permits 35% to 40% more containers to be stacked on the same surface area and with the same stacking height as with a straddle carrier, twice than a front loader and up to five times the amount handled by a pure chassis system, substantially increasing the land usage profitability. Though the wheels are rubber-tyred, the gantry is not provided with a steering wheel, but only with controls to keep it travelling straight ahead.
Another advantage of Rubber Tyred Transtainer® Cranes is that the operation management can be automated. (This also applies to Rail Mounted Transtainer® Cranes).
With the unladen crane stationary, the wheels may be turned to 90º, allowing the gantry to travel at right angels to its original direction. This enables the crane to move from a block of stacked containers to a parallel one, when required. For example when attending a deep-sea container ship- several or all Transtainer® Cranes at a terminal may be concentrated on one block of containers.
Because of this mobility, the crane cannot be powered through an electrical cable, and so all power necessary for the different motions is produced by a diesel engine generator set, mounted on the crane.
An optional Position Detecting System (PDS) allows to have the crane’s position continuously identified and transmitted by radio to the central computer, indicating both where the gantry is working and the number of the container is handling.

RAIL MOUNTED TRANSTAINER® CRANE
Ever since the begining of containerisation, the Rail Mounted Transtainer® (RMT®) Crane, which is analogous to the Rubber Tyred Transtainer® Crane, has been playing an important role.
This type of crane has progressed considerably, particularly in its geometry. The high density load centers requiring maximum land usage and quick transfers can make a very profitable investment on a wide span (25 up to 60m), Rail Mounted Transtainer® cranes, either with or without cantilevers. Also the RMT® Crane lends itself ideally for automatization.
RMT® can be easily automated and so prepared for a driverless operation what certainly is of tremendous potential for any new automatic, reliable and efficient container terminal.
